Let’s Talk About the Ps3 Move

For those who need the basics, the PlayStation Move is a remote-like motion-sensitive controller with a sphere at the end. The sub-controller is an off-hand controller being offered for some Move games. The Move controller connects to the PS3 with the help of a PlayStation Eye camera, which detects the Move’s colored sphere, while tilt sensors in the move transmit their position data to the PS3.

But at first glance, the whole thing seems like just another version of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Not quite. There are key differences:

-Fewer buttons: The Move controller is actually even more streamlined than the Wii Remote. Nintendo’s Remote still offers/confuses a new player with a d-pad, plus, A, minus, 1 and 2 buttons as well as a home button and B trigger. The Move has its own home button and underbelly trigger, but just five other points of button input. That makes the controller actually feel a little naked and therefore likely even less daunting to a new player — unless they need their controllers to look like TV remotes.

-No wasted batteries:
The Wii remote sucks up AA battery juice. The Move and its companion sub-controller are rechargeable via the same mini-USB connection used to charge the PS3’s main controller.

-A smarter controller:
While playing SOCOM 4, a third person-shooter, with the Move pointed at the TV like a gun and the sub-controller in your left hand to command character movement. Wii games that were controlled with Remote and Nunchuk could be befuddled if the player pointed the Remote away from the screen. If you were playing a shooter and aimed just off the screen, the game’s camera might start spinning or the game would pause and ask for the player to point at the TV again. The combination of camera sensors — the Sony Eyetoy on top of the TV detects the presence of the Move — and a gyroscope prevented SOCOM 4 from getting confused. When you move your controller to point off of the TV, the gyroscopic sensors keep track of movement. The same thing would happen if the Eyetoy camera gets blocked. The precision of the controller diminishes in that situation, but the PS3 doesn’t lose track of the device.

-No wire!: The Wii Remote and Nunchuk are tethered by a short cable. The PS3 Move and its subcontroller are not.

-No off-hand gyro: The Wii Nunchuk has a sensor that detects motion, more crudely than does the Remote. The PS3’s version of the Nunchuk, does not have a motion sensor, according to a developers. There’s a chance that is not final, but that is the case with the controllers at Sony’s showcase event today. But that’s why two-handed boxing-style games were shown with two Moves. On the Wii, those kinds of games are handled, with supposedly less precision, with a Remote and Nunchuk.

-The colored ball:
The colorful sphere at the pointing end of the Move is the thing that the PlayStation Eye uses to detect the presence of the Move. The color changes. In a demo of SOCOM 4 played by Stephen Totilo of Kotaku the sphere was orange. Why? Because the software detected that there was no orange in the background. If he had been in a different room, the color would have been different. The Wii’s signature hue may be white, but this varying color at the end of the Move will likely prove to be the Move’s visual trademark.

-The Z: Without a Wii MotionPlus, the Wii Remote cannot accurately sense depth. The Wii’s sensor bar doesn’t know how close the player is standing to their TV, nor can it recognize movements toward or away from it. The PS3, however, can detect such movement in the Z-plane. It does this thanks to the sphere at the end of the controller. If the player moves the Move toward themselves, the PlayStation Eye camera sees the sphere shrink and therefore knows the controller has been moved in the Z-plane. Clever.

Those are the differences, all less obvious than the similarities. The PS3 Move is being shown to support shooters and table tennis, fist fighting and co-op platforming. These may be familiar templates to Wii gamers who have sampled Metroid, Wii Sports, and Super Mario Galaxy. But at the nitty-gritty level, some of the PS3 Move’s difference offer some nice feature improvements — maybe a drawback or two — and something that isn’t quite the Wii-too it appears to be at first glance.

OnLive Dated and Priced

PC gaming service OnLive, officially unveiled at last year’s Game Developers Conference, was finally dated and priced at this year’s show. The on demand streaming game arrives June 17th in the United States, priced at $14.95 USD per month.

But wait there’s more! OnLive is comping the first three months worth of service to the first 25,000 qualified people who sign up for the service and promises multi-month pricing “loyalty programs” will be announced closer to E3. OnLive says it also plans to release rental and purchase pricing details closer to E3.

The bad news? OnLive will be launching in the 48 contiguous United States, leaving poor Hawaii and Alaska in the cold.

Keep in mind that $14.95 USD monthly fee does not include the rental and ownership fees associated with actually playing those games. The subscription fee pays for things like “instant-play free game demos; multiplayer across PC, Mac and TV platforms; massive spectating; viewing of Brag Clips video capture and posting; and cloud-saving of games you’ve purchased.” Yeah, don’t toss your PC in the nearest Dumpster just yet.

Yeah, I’m so against this service. I wrote an article when it was announced a year ago. Take a read here. My views have not changed much.

mw2

Recent rumors have been floating around that MW2’s Stimulus Package DLC will be for free download. It is slated to come out March 30th but their or no official reports that it is free.

However, it does seem like it would either be for free or for a lower price than usual DLC. The name “Stimulus Package” does leave many gamers wondering. It may be an attempt to lure gamers back from Battlefield Bad Company 2. This won’t make or break MW2 though. I’m sure most of us are saving up our Microsoft points in wait of this DLC anyway. Could it be free due to all the legal problems infinity ward has been allegedly been facing? Who knows? Happy Noob Tubing!

Blur Beta Game Night Recap

Posted by Eric 'junegore' Baumgardner On March - 9 - 2010Comments

Oh how I was not thinking when deciding to make a game night based around a beta. So many problems while trying to play the game. Somehow though from what I can gather it was still a blast.

First off big thanks to all that decided to show up and play the beta. Those who did not I understand that things come up and I hope you can make the next game event. Even though I did still play with the flu…..Really though I had a blast. With the exception of the server problems and the problem of the 360 freezing up over and over. The game was still a blast. That says something about the game. I love the power-ups and the driving style. The game has tons of fun just pouring out of it.

Lots of nice features including Twitter as well as a in game party feature. I look very forward to playing more of the beta in a few days when the flu decides to stop attacking me. As for the game night itself. I will have a video in the next few days of the nights festivities. So…did you have fun on the beta?

They Pushed ‘Mii’ Too Far

Earlier in the week I decided that since my girlfriend never played her Wii anymore that it was time to sell it. She agreed. Three days later she decides that she wants it back. I guess she did some thinking that she had an Animal Crossing save that she had put like 4 years into (including the DS version). So trying to be a supportive guy and and gamer I decided to go and buy her a new Wii. Well, little did I know that’s when the trouble was going to start.

To begin with after buying the new one and taking a SD card to the guys house who bought the old Wii I find out that Animal Crossing saves can’t be copied or moved. Nintendo will not allow it in order to stop people from cheating. They still allow you to change the time though. Just not give you the save game that you have worked on. So the only thing for me to do was offer to trade a brand new Wii I just bought to this guy for the old Wii I just sold him. He then tells me that he has been playing Virtual Console games I downloaded. So I decided to move them to the SD card and it won’t work. I try to find a way to re-download them to the new Wii, but no luck. So I called Nintendo and that’s when I washed my hands with Nintendo…

Apparently you can’t get the things that you pay for on another Wii. If you buy something off the Virtual Console or Wii Ware you CAN NOT ever have it another Wii. If your Wii breaks or something happens to it you just have to buy it again. I have read all sorts of horror stories online about people losing the content they have downloaded. Some people lost as much as $300.00 worth of content.

I have been against the Wii since the start of the systems life. That will NOT be changing anytime soon. I think that the Wii is a souped up GameCube and the only way it’s surviving now it simply because they have not ran out of motion gimmicks yet. Nintendo claims that they revolutionized the game world with the Wii. I’m not going to say they did not. What they don’t mention is while they were busy revolutionizing the world me and people like me moved on without Nintendo. They can only ride the Mario train so far and honestly I hope that train stops soon. I hope that with all the DS models we are getting and rehashed Mario bull shit that this will be Nintendo’s last run at revolutionizing anything.

Announced: Rock Band 3

Viacom President and CEO Philippe Dauman officially outed Rock Band 3, due for release this holiday season, when it will “will innovate and revolutionize the music genre” all over again.

Dauman revealed the game while speaking at the Credit Suisse Group Global Media and Communications Conference this morning, quickly followed by Tweets from several members of the Harmonix staff, relieved to finally be able to discuss what they’ve been working on, as well as this new entry on the Rock Band Facebook page:

Harmonix is developing Rock Band 3 for worldwide release this holiday season! The game, which will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts, will innovate and revolutionize the music genre once again, just as Harmonix did with the original Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Stay tuned for more details!

How could Rock Band 3 possibly revolutionize the music genre any further? Will there be harmonies? Will it accept your own MP3s, converting them on the fly? Look for the answers to these questions and more whenever Harmonix feels it’s a good time to give them to us.

bbc2

Are the server issues really due to BBC2 not having a beta test for Xbox 360? That’s what some have thought. PS3 servers seem to be just fine and some are chopping it up to Ps3 having had a beta test version before release and 360 not having one. JGGH wants to know your thoughts on the BBC2 XBL outage and what you have been playing in the meantime.

In case you were under any illusion that Microsoft’s E3 this year was going to be light on Natal, consider it shattered: you’re going to see more than your fair share.

“We have very strong first and third-party developer support for [Natal]. Needless to say, we’re putting some of our best people on coming up with great game ideas for this, and we’re going to have some great stuff,” said Microsoft CFO Mindy Mount, speaking at the Jefferies Annual Global Technology Conference in New York today.

“As a history, Microsoft works very strong with third-party developers, so we’re hoping that we’re going to get some great titles from that. You’ll be able to see more news about that this summer at E3. We’ll show you the full line-up.”

Microsoft said in January that 70 percent of the world’s publishers are currently working on Natal products.

Natal, Microsoft’s 360 motion-sensing system, will release in October, if Jonathan Ross is to be believed.
